A Coruña

A Coruña is one of the largest cities in Galicia and has developed around a magnificent port that stands in front of the Avenida de la Marina with its emblematic glass facades know as the nickname “Ciudad de Cristal” (Crystal City). It is also known as the City of Hercules because of the legends linking Hercules to the oldest functioning lighthouse in the world: The Hercules Tower, dating from Roman times and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2009.

Places not to be missed are the Plaza de Maria Pita, named after our local heroine who fought against the troops of the english corsair Sir Francis Drake. The San Carlos Gardens with the tomb of Sir John Moore, which will remind us of the war of independence against the Napoleonic troops. A walk through the old town will take us to the Romanesque churches of Santa María do Campo and Santiago, the latter being a starting point for pilgrims on the English Way to Santiago de Compostela. The Baroque churches of Santo Domingo and San Jorge, where the first gay wedding took place in 1901. We will also walk through its charming squares such as Santa Bárbara or General Azcárraga.

But A Coruña is a perfect symbiosis of ancient and modern city, one of the main tourist attractions is the longest maritime promenade in Europe which will allow us to enjoy unforgettable views of the A Coruña estuary, the Atlantic Ocean and the Riazor and Orzán Beaches. Along the route we will find a good collection of architectural works of contemporary art such as: the Domus, the first museum dedicated to the study of the human being created by the famous architect Arata Isozaki; the Finisterrae aquarium; the Riazor Stadium, where the local football club “El Deportivo de La Coruña” plays; the Millennium, the highest glass obelisk in the world, without forgetting the astonishing Afundación building by Nicholas Grimshaw.
