Lugo

Lugo, the walled city, is so called because of its imposing 3rd century Roman Wall, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. It is the best preserved Roman wall in Europe, over 2 kilometres long, with its perimeter, gates and towers intact.

Although the Roman remains of Lugo are still present, the current configuration of the city is that of a medieval town, with squares such as the Plaza del Campo (former Roman forum) or the Plaza Mayor; churches such as San Froilán or Santa María A Nova, and convents such as San Francisco or Santo Domingo, which take us back to the Middle Ages, when the pilgrims of the Primitive Way of Santiago passed through Lugo.

A visit to the Cathedral of Santa María, which has the privilege of having the Blessed Sacrament on permanent display, is also a must. This temple, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015, offers us architectural masterpieces, such as the chapel of the Virgen de los Ojos Grandes (Virgin of the Big Eyes); sculptures such as the choir stalls by Francisco de Moure, or the altarpieces by the great master Cornielis from Holland.

Among its museums, the Provincial Museum of Lugo stands out for its interesting collections from the Roman era (votive altars, mosaics, steles, etc.); the 19th century Sargadelos ceramics (the most famous in Galicia); and pre-roman gold and silver jewellery from the Bronze Age and Celtic culture.

Visiting Lugo with our official licensed tour guides will make you relive the Roman past, learn about the historical episodes of the Middle Ages and discover the present city with its festivals, traditions and anecdotes.
