Vigo is the most populated and industrial city in Galicia. It is known as the Gateway to the Atlantic because of its port’s relationship with America. During the visit, we will contemplate a good collection of monumental statues such as “Ao traballo” (monument dedicated to work) or “Fonte dos cabalos” (an impressive horse fountain). We will visit one of the most important ports in Europe, with 20 km of port facilities where you can find the shipyards, the fish market, the fishing docks, the ferry terminal or the cruise terminal from where thousands of Galician emigrants left for America in the past. We will show you the diversity of port activities and the different types of ships used.
We will approach lookouts such as those of A Guía or Castro to contemplate the views of the city, the Ria de Vigo or the paradisiacal Cíes Islands. Other places of interest include Samil beach or the Pazo Quiñones de León, a 17th-century Galician manor house with period furniture and splendid gardens.
A walk through the old town will take us to the street where the oyster sellers are located, the fishermen’s quarter O Berbés, with its typical arcaded buildings, the co-cathedral of Santa Maria, the oldest houses in the city, the picturesque street of Os Cesteiros (a street of craftsmen), the Plaza de A Constitución or the Porta do Sol with beautiful buildings from the beginning of the 20th century, which will lead us to the Rúa do Principe (shopping street).
And its history ? Thanks to our official licensed tour guides, you will be able to go back to the origin of the canning industry, discover the illustrious people who visited the city, such as Mata Hari or Jules Verne, who dedicated a chapter to the bay of Vigo in his famous novel “Twenty miles under the sea”; relive the history of the galleons loaded with gold that sank in the battle of Rande or discover that Vigo was the first city in Spain to defeat the Napoleonic troops
