In the north of the province of Lugo, on the border with Asturias, lies the Mariña Lucense with its long beaches with capricious formations such as the famous Beach of As Catedrais (the cathedrals), today considered a Natural Monument. Throughout the region we find not only stories of the “indianos” (emigrants from America who returned with their fortune) but also their attractive architecture with large houses, churches and schools which give us an idea of the great economic power they had achieved.
In Ribadeo, we can enjoy a beautiful view of the mouth of the river Eo and the neighbouring Asturias, the marina, the old mineral and goods loading dock and the lighthouse of Isla Pancha. Nearby is the picturesque fishing village of Rinlo, where there are old natural lobster and spider crab farms.
The initiative taken by Raymundo Ibañez, Marquis of Sargadelos, together with the abundance of wood, water and iron ore in the lands of Cervo, allowed the appearance of the first heavy industry in Galicia at the end of the 18th century, the Sargadelos factory, which later became an earthenware factory, now of international renown. The industrial structures of the old foundry, the Lovers’ Walk and the Sargadelos ceramic industrial complex make this place a historic-artistic site to visit.
And if we want to get to know the oldest cathedral in Spain, we must go to the Basilica of San Martiño de Mondoñedo, whose origins date back to the 6th century. Our route will also take us along the northern route to Santiago de Compostela, which will lead us to Vilanova de Lourenza and its monastery of San Salvador, which houses the tomb of the Holy Count (an early Christian sarcophagus). Nearby is the original medieval town of Mondoñedo with its Cathedral of Santa María, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015.
