The Coast of Death

The Costa da Morte is one of the most attractive coastal areas in Galicia, with wild landscapes, white sandy beaches and turquoise waters, fishing villages that seem to have come out of a dream, sanctuaries with ancient traditions and above all the attraction of reaching Cape Finisterre.

Since ancient times, few places in the world have attracted so much interest, even before the arrival of Christianity, Cape Finisterre was considered a place of pilgrimage, perhaps our ancestors followed the Milky Way to reach the place that the Romans considered the end of the Earth. Watching the sun set over the sea is still a sight to behold and fuels the Celtic belief that paradise lay in the vastness of the ocean.

Today, many pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela extend their journey to visit the shrines of Santa María das Areas in Finisterre and Nosa Señora da Barca in Muxía, patron saint and guardian of sailors and fishermen.

The Coast of Death owes its tragic name to the many shipwrecks that have occurred there throughout history, as it is the obligatory passage for ships between Northern Europe and the Mediterranean and Africa, and therefore one of the busiest maritime routes in the world.
